Solar Energy Pros & Cons

Let’s talk about what we know about solar energy. Unquestionably, the sun is a powerful energy source and we know we are unable to collect even a fraction of this energy. By installing solar panels  this is a way to harness some of this power.  As you may have heard solar energy has been widely criticized for being expensive and inefficient.

Advantages and Disadvantages for Virginia Beach residents

Let’s talk about maintenance of solar panels and the ups and downs. Solar panels require cleaning a couple of times a year. The upside to solar panels is that there are no moving parts. The inverter is continuously working to convert solar energy into electricity and needs to be changed after 5-10 years. And the cables are going to require some maintenance. Other disadvantages of include:

  • The Cost – the initial cost of a solar system is fairly high. This includes paying for the solar panels, inverter, batteries, wiring and the installation.
  • Weather Dependent – Although solar energy can be collected during cloudy days, the efficiency of the solar system drops. A few cloudy days in a row can have a noticeable effect on the energy system. And we must consider that solar energy cannot be collected during the night.
  • Solar Energy Storage – If you don’t use it right away, you need to store it. Storing it in large batteries can get very expensive
  • Space – If you want to produce a lot of solar energy you are going to need a lot of solar panels and a lot of space. Some roofs aren’t big enough to have as many panels as you’d like.
  • Pollution – Although compared to other sources of energy its a lot less; however, still contributes to pollution. Transportation and installation of solar systems has been associated with greenhouse gases. There are also some hazardous and toxic material products used during the manufacturing process.

There are some obvious advantages, they include:

  • Renewable Energy – It’s a true renewable energy source as long as we have the sun.
  • Reduces Electric Bills – How much you can save depends on the size of the solar system and your electricity and heat usage.
  • Diverse Applications – Solar energy can be used to distill water in regions with limited clean water supplies and to power satellites in space.
